The Transformative Journey of Dr. Jim Blessman and Blessman International

Welcome to Blessman International! I’m Dr. Jim Blessman, the founder. I want to personally thank you for visiting and give you a glimpse into the story behind this ministry. Mine is a journey of faith, transformation, and obedience from a small-town Iowa doctor to a full-time missionary in South Africa, radically transformed by the love of Jesus Christ.

A Calling Born in the Heartland

Humble Beginnings

I grew up in Clearfield, Iowa, in the 1950s, raised by loving, hardworking parents, Leroy and Betty Jo, who modeled integrity and compassion. At just 14 years old, I knew I wanted to become a physician. That dream fueled years of hard work and perseverance, leading me to earn my degree from the University of Iowa Medical School.

I went on to build a thriving medical career, including Iowa’s first chronic pain center and a clinic focused on occupational medicine. Life looked successful from the outside: I had a respected profession, financial stability, and a beautiful family. But inwardly, I knew something was missing.

From Success to Significance

A Life-Changing Encounter

By my late 30s, I had achieved material success: homes, cars, vacations, friendships, but not spiritual peace. I was going to church, but I wasn’t truly walking with Christ. Everything changed when I met my wife, Beth, and her father, Del Cramer, a man of deep faith. Del invited me to a Promise Keepers event in 1995, and that weekend, I encountered God in a powerful way.

In the months that followed, I became a born-again believer and began a new life in Christ. Evangelism Explosion training helped me understand salvation more clearly and taught me how to share my faith. My priorities shifted completely: God first, family second, career third.

Saying Yes to Missions

A Clear Call

I asked God to show me His will for my life, and He answered in dramatic fashion. Over six weeks, I lost all three sources of my medical income. Rather than panic, I chose to see it as divine redirection. After a season of prayer and fasting, Beth and I enrolled at the Assemblies of God School of Missions. We were ready to go wherever God called. I began traveling the world as a medical missionary, serving in more than 70 countries. But it was South Africa that gripped my heart. The people. The need. The opportunity for impact. It felt like home.

A Ministry Takes Root

Planting Seeds in South Africa

In 2003, Beth and I partnered with Reaching a Generation, an incredible South African ministry serving youth through gospel-centered comic books. We joined the work by providing optical care, making sure children could read and respond to the Good News. As the ministry grew, we formalized our presence in South Africa by founding Blessman Medical Ministries in 2007, now known as Blessman International.

Responding to Tragedy with Purpose

In 2012, tragedy struck: three children were murdered while walking to a nearby children’s home. That moment cemented our purpose - to reach children with the love of Christ before it’s too late. Today, we operate three campuses in South Africa dedicated to that very mission.

Serving Without a Salary

Beth and I believe so deeply in this work that we’ve never taken a salary from Blessman International. Our reward is seeing children nourished, disciples raised up, and communities transformed. Our life is a testimony to God’s provision and the joy that comes from surrendering to His will.
